StarBlast Complete Guide: Ship Upgrades, Combat Tactics, and Mode Strategies

StarBlast is a multiplayer arcade space shooter where you mine asteroids, upgrade your ship through 7 tiers, and battle other pilots for galactic supremacy. With multiple game modes and deep upgrade mechanics, StarBlast offers endless strategic depth.

StarBlast Gameplay

Whether you are mining your first asteroid or commanding a max-tier battleship, this guide will help you dominate the stars.

Getting Started

Basic Controls

Action Input Notes
Move WASD / Arrow Keys Thrust in 4 directions
Aim Mouse Ship faces cursor
Fire Left Click Hold for continuous fire
Boost Shift Consumes gems

Your First Match

When you spawn, you are in a Tier 1 ship — the smallest and weakest vessel. Your immediate priority is mining asteroids to collect gems and upgrade to Tier 2 as quickly as possible.

Asteroid Mining Guide

How Mining Works

Shoot asteroids to break them apart. When an asteroid is destroyed, it releases gems that you collect by flying over them. Larger asteroids yield more gems but take longer to destroy.

Mining Efficiency Tips

  1. Target medium asteroids first — They offer the best gem-to-time ratio
  2. Mine in clusters — Find areas with multiple asteroids close together
  3. Watch your back — Other players will attack you while you mine
  4. Collect gems immediately — Uncollected gems can be stolen by other players

Gem Values

Asteroid Size Average Gems Time to Destroy
Small 2-3 2-3 seconds
Medium 5-8 5-7 seconds
Large 10-15 10-15 seconds

Ship Tiers and Upgrades

StarBlast features 7 tiers of ships, each with unique stats and playstyles.

Tier 1: Starting Ship

Weak weapons and low health. Focus entirely on mining and avoiding combat. Upgrade to Tier 2 as quickly as possible.

Tier 2-3: Early Combat

You can now engage in basic combat, but only against other Tier 1-3 ships. Continue mining to fuel further upgrades.

Strategy: Hunt Tier 1 ships that are still mining. They are easy targets and drop gems when destroyed.

Tier 4-5: Mid-Game Power

Your ship now has decent firepower and health. You can challenge most ships one-on-one but should still avoid Tier 6-7 vessels.

Strategy: Control asteroid-rich areas. Deny mining opportunities to lower-tier ships while building your own gem reserves.

Tier 6-7: Late Game Dominance

The most powerful ships in the game. At this stage, you can take on almost any opponent. However, other Tier 6-7 players pose a significant threat.

Strategy: Team up with other high-tier players to control the map. In free-for-all, pick off isolated targets and avoid group engagements.

Combat Tactics

1. Kiting

Maintain distance from your target while firing. This works best with ships that have long-range weapons. Kiting prevents enemies from landing their shots while you chip away at their health.

2. Ambush

Hide behind asteroids and wait for an enemy to pass. Strike when they are focused on mining or moving in a predictable pattern. Ambushes are especially effective against higher-tier ships that underestimate you.

3. Ramming

Some ships deal collision damage. If your ship has high health and the enemy is low, a well-timed ram can finish them off. Be careful — ramming damages both ships.

4. Retreat and Heal

If you are losing a fight, fly away and mine asteroids to slowly regenerate health. Never fight to the death unless you are certain you can win — survival is more important than pride.

Game Modes

Survival Mode

Free-for-all combat. Last ship standing wins. This mode rewards aggressive play and fast upgrades. Get to Tier 4+ quickly, then start hunting.

Key strategy: The early game is a race. The first player to reach Tier 5 has a massive advantage. Mine aggressively and avoid fights until you upgrade.

Team Mode

Two teams battle for supremacy. Coordination is key — communicate with teammates, share gems, and focus fire on enemy ships.

Key strategy: Assign roles based on ship tiers. High-tier ships serve as frontline tanks, while lower-tier ships mine gems and provide support fire.

Invasion Mode

Defend against waves of AI enemies. This mode is great for practicing combat and earning gems in a lower-pressure environment.

Key strategy: Focus on survival over speed. Each wave is progressively harder, so upgrade steadily rather than rushing.

Pro Mode

Enhanced mechanics with faster gameplay and higher stakes. Recommended for experienced players only.

Key strategy: Every mistake is costly. Play conservatively and only engage when you have a clear advantage.

Advanced Strategies

Gem Management

Gems serve dual purposes: upgrading your ship and boosting. Boosting consumes gems, so only use it when necessary. At low tiers, save every gem for upgrades. At high tiers, you can afford to boost more freely.

Map Control

The map is divided into sectors. Controlling a sector with rich asteroid fields gives you a steady gem supply while denying resources to enemies. In team mode, coordinate with teammates to hold strategic sectors.

Pirate Strategy

Instead of mining, some players exclusively hunt other ships to steal their gems. This "pirate" playstyle is risky but can be very rewarding. Pirates typically target miners who are focused on asteroids and not watching for threats.

Counter-strategy: If you are being hunted by a pirate, fly toward allies or into asteroid fields where larger ships have difficulty maneuvering.

Ship Upgrade Path

Choosing which ship to upgrade to at each tier affects your playstyle. Here is a balanced upgrade path suitable for most players:

Tier Ship Type Strength
1 Basic Fighter Starting point
2 Scout Speed and agility
3 Interceptor Balanced combat
4 Destroyer Heavy firepower
5 Cruiser Tank and damage
6 Battleship Dominant presence
7 Dreadnought Ultimate power

Common Mistakes

  1. Engaging too early — Fighting at Tier 1-2 is almost always a mistake; mine first
  2. Ignoring the minimap — Enemy positions are critical information
  3. Wasting gems on boost — Save gems for upgrades, especially early game
  4. Fighting alone in team mode — Always stick with teammates
  5. Chasing kills into asteroid fields — You take collision damage from asteroids

Conclusion

StarBlast rewards strategic thinking and patience. Mine efficiently, upgrade smartly, and fight only when the odds favor you. Whether you prefer solo survival or team battles, mastering these strategies will make you a force to be reckoned with in the galaxy. Ready to blast off? Play StarBlast now.
